The origins of ‘Pompey’ is long disputed and there’s many stories to how one of the most recognisable nicknames in the Football League came about. In 1793 the French gunship ‘Le Pompee’ was captured and later became the guardship of Portsmouth harbour. Another legend claims that a drunken sailor shouted ‘poor old Pompey’ during a lecture on the Roman General Pompey, who had been killed. In 1781 a group of Portsmouth sailors climbed 98 feet up Pompey’s Pillar in Egypt. They became known as ‘The Pompey Boys’.
